Essence of a Vampyre

First, I think it best to define the essence of the vampire (fictional) before attempting to define the Essence of the Vampyre (magical). In this way, I hope to invite discussion and/or debate on the topic, and to hear from other magicians' experience with this type of magic.

Should vampires sparkle?

Vampires are definitely in vogue right now. Browse through any bookstore's racks and you'll find a score of novels with ‘vampire' in the title. This theme is especially notable in the young adult lit sections, where the reader will observe pieces such as the Twilight series, Vampire Diaries, Vampire Kisses, Vampire Academy and, my personal favorite, Vampire Beach. Has anyone noticed a trend?

Throughout the ages, attacks on people have been attributed to supernatural creatures like werewolves and vampires, but in 1886, a German neurologist named Richard von Krafft-Ebing noted the compulsive and sexual presentation of the attacks. He wrote about them in Psychopathia Sexualis, and many of his 238 case histories concerned a violent eroticism triggered by blood.

Influenced by Fiction

Allan Menzies, 22, used to view the vampire film, Queen of the Damned, over and over and over. He admitted that he had obsessively watched his "queen," Akasha, more than 100 times. His fixation on her and his beliefs about how this cruel vampire stepped out of the role and into his life to barter for his soul eventually turned deadly.

Where do vampires come from? In my studies, I have found three possible origin myths for the vampires.

The Vampire in Different Cultures

The following is a summary of the more common species of vampire believed to have infested Europe in the 18th century. This was taken from a book by a Rumanian author who's main hypothesis was that the prevalence and persistence of the vampire myth in central and southern Europe was due to conflict between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

This is a brief essay on the origins and causes of vampirism based on my reading in European folklore. The information given is based on common European belief concerning the nature and causes of vampirism. In that culture the witch was an agent of the devil and a being much feared.

Like Water for Blood

Today I was reflecting on what I learned in the 8th grade. The science and energy teacher told us he had something written on the board behind the screen that would change our lives forever. He told us that this one statement 5 words long would touch just about everything in our lives. He asked if we were ready-stepped aside and raised the screen. On the board it read :
