I just re-watched
30 Days of Night. It had been a while since I first saw the film, and I had forgotten just how evil and nasty the vamps were in that story. Having forced myself to watch
Twilight the other week, I discovered, having not read the novel, just how cuddly the vampires are in that story. (sorry to all the
Twilight fans, but this one obviously wasn't made for my demographic)
Aside from the fact that 1 is rated R, and the other PG-13, it quickly became apparent that these movies are polar opposites. When exposed to sunlight, one type burns up, while the other sparkles. One type doesn't kill or drink from humans, while the other rampantly kills almost the entire population of a town, without regard for, I dunno, pacing themselves so they have a food source for an extended period of time (don't get me started on all the plot holes in
30 Days).
I guess I prefer the more violent "traditional" vampire, although I think they are a little too extreme in
30 Days, after all, what sort of existence can you live as a vamp when you viciously eradicate your food source, and you're left walking around covered in blood and dated clothing? You kind of stick out. I can't say I'm one for the de-fanged, incredibly romanticized vampire like those in
Twilight.
So which do you prefer?
